Weekly Update

AutumnDear King George Families,

I hope you have all had a good week.  It’s hard to believe October is almost over!

We had a School Council meeting on Tuesday.  We talked about a number of things, including fundraisers and spirit days.  Council decided to proceed with the Winter Greenery fundraiser.  In the past, the items for sale have been mostly Christmas-themed.  This year, we are working to add to the choices so there are options for families for whom Christmas is not a day of significance.  We will not be doing the Acorn cards fundraiser because it takes quite a bit of class time to do it the traditional way and teachers are very aware of the importance of helping students make up for some of the instructional time that has been lost over the last year and a half.  If families wish to create and order cards through Acron, then they can do it independently.  All the details are on their website. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards some window coverings and perhaps a new projector in the library.  This will allow us to project onto a screen in a sufficiently darkened space (or using a sufficiently bright projector) so children will be able to see it.  The library is a full-time teaching space now and the goal is for it to be a dynamic and lively hub in our school.  The minutes of this meeting will soon be posted on our website under the School Council tab.

For spirit days, as a board and certainly at King George, we are working to make sure we invite everyone in, and are striving to ensure no one cultural group’s voice is centred over others’.  More to come on this!

We have had some wonderful parents express an interest in taking on roles in the School Council Executive.  Details will be shared once everything is settled.  At this point, it does not look like there will be a need for elections, since each position has one person interested.

Grade 7 and 8 students had vaccinations this week against Hepatitis B, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Meningococcaus.  If your child missed these immunizations, then click here for more information on how to ensure your child gets those shots.

Friday is a PD day this week.  Students will not attend school.  Staff will be working on assessment and student support.  Teachers will be working on reviewing the initial reading and math assessment data and making plans for moving forward.  They will also be learning about a new framework for exploring student strengths and needs with a focus on meeting children where they are and offering targeted support to help them move forward.

And one last thing!  Our website can be translated into 98 different languages from Afrikaans to Zulu and lots in between.  To make it happen, just click the “Select Language” option right at the top right of the home page on the school’s website.  We are going to start posting more information here so families can take advantage of this helpful feature.  I will be posting these updates as well as sending them out in an email.  Please share this message with anyone you know whom you think might find it helpful.

Happy weekend, everyone.  I hope you have a cozy spot to spend these chilly, damp days.

With warm regards,

Jane Bibby, Principal
