Weekly Update

Posted October 11, 2022

Hello, KG families!

We have had a good week here at school, but I think we are all ready for a nice, long weekend!

Please remember that the Student Census will close on Sunday.  Reminder emails were sent out this week.  Our school has had an amazing response, but we certainly haven’t heard from everyone.  Please make time to share your child’s voice with us so the board can plan appropriately moving forward.

Special lunches will start this week and milk will start the week after.  Orders are always due by Sunday at noon.  For Tuesdays, families can order lunch from Swiss Chalet, Pita Pit, Quesada or Burger’s Priest.  We will be on a rotating calendar for 8 weeks and will then review our restaurant choices.  On Fridays, Gino’s pizza will be available.  And white and chocolate milk will be available every day. I’ve attached a letter and Parent FAQ’s with instructions and details – please have a look!  The funds we raise from the sale of these lunches will go towards reading resources, outdoor line painting on the pavement (the four-square games have disappeared!), and new team jerseys for sports tournaments.

With Halloween fast approaching, we wanted to clarify our plans for Monday, October 31st here at King George.  Just like in previous years, students who wish to dress in black and orange or wear a costume to school are welcome to do so. Students are also welcome to skip the whole business.  We want students to do what feels comfortable for them.  If they do choose to wear a costume, then please leave masks and weapons at home.  As well, we ask that all school community members avoid using identities and cultures as costumes. This includes appropriative costumes/cultural stereotypes, black/brown face, transphobic costumes, body-shaming and objectifying costumes, and costumes that joke about situations that have caused harm. Such costumes could perpetuate stereotypes and can cause hurt that can further marginalize and oppress members of our community.  Wearing a costume is a chance to express a side of yourself that you don’t always feel free to show, so we will be working to achieve that freedom of expression while ensuring everyone feels safe and included.  We appreciate your help in making this day fun and inclusive for all our students, staff and families.

On Tuesday at 6:30 pm, we will hold our October School Council meeting in the Library.  You may enter the school through the Library doors or the main doors by the flagpole.  If you are not able to attend in-person, then please use this link to join us:  meet.google.com/oud-nawm-trv.  I hope to see lots of you there!  We will be joined by Dr. Jenny Marino, our board’s Mental Health Lead, who will share information about board supports for student mental health and how you can use the same framework to help your child from home.  All parents and caregivers of King George students are welcome.  There is no membership or application.  If you are one of our families, then we encourage you to come out.  We will be inviting more speakers to our monthly meetings based on the responses to the Dotmocracy we held during Open House.

I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with your families and loved ones.  I hope you have lots to be thankful for right now.  I know I am grateful to work with such a committed and talented staff, and to have the opportunity to be part of the wonderful King George community of families.  Thank you very much for the privilege of spending each day with your amazing children.

With warm regards,

Jane
