On Friday, May 29, approximately 200 students and staff from Norwell District Secondary School came together for Relay for Life, a fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The event, returning to Norwell after a hiatus of several years, was graciously hosted by Between the Lines Sports Campus in Listowel and ran from noon until midnight.

Throughout the day and evening, participants took part in a wide variety of activities including dodgeball, Drom, tug-of-war, pickleball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, zumba, face painting, a photo booth, live music and many other fun events. The atmosphere was filled with energy, teamwork, and a shared commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer.
During the opening ceremonies, participants were welcomed with a message of unity and hope. Students and staff were reminded that by working together, we can help change the future of cancer. Immediately following the opening ceremonies, Norwell's cancer survivors were introduced and recognized. They officially kicked off the event by walking the first lap of the relay, with participants proudly following behind as the survivors led the way.
One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was the Luminary Ceremony. This special time allowed participants to remember and reflect on loved ones lost to cancer. As students and staff walked the track, they read the heartfelt messages written on the luminary bags, creating a powerful atmosphere of remembrance and support.
Even after a busy day of activities, participants continued to bring enthusiasm and energy to the event. Students enjoyed hacky sack games, music provided by DJ Cody, and a movie later in the evening. Throughout the day, participants also had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the many generously donated prizes provided by local businesses and community supporters.
As midnight approached, participants gathered for one final lap around the track. They celebrated not only a successful event but also the incredible impact they had made together. Having already surpassed the original fundraising goal of $25,000, hopes were high that Norwell would reach the $50,000 mark. When all the pledges and donations were counted, Norwell had raised an astounding $51,486.61 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Staff advisor Betty Douglas reflected on the success of the event and the support shown by the Norwell community. “We are grateful to live in a community that is so supportive and lucky to work with students who understand the importance of giving back and helping others,” said Douglas. “The dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm shown by our students throughout Relay for Life was inspiring. This achievement belongs to everyone who donated, participated, volunteered, and supported our efforts.”
A huge thank you goes out to our community sponsors, donors, participants, volunteers, and the dedicated organizing committee whose hard work made this event possible. Once again, the Norwell community demonstrated its remarkable generosity and commitment to giving back. Together, we have shown that when a community unites behind a cause, extraordinary things can happen.
Thank you to all of our generous sponsors - see list below.
