• We are at the halfway mark for Mental Health and Education week. Today, we’re looking at the Science of Wellness and how your body responds to stress. Take a deep breath. And another. What do you notice about your body when you do this? Did you know that breathing can have a special power over our mind? Certain breathing techniques regulate our heart rate and can let our bodies know that we are ok during times of stress. Other things, like sleep, getting outside and eating well, all have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. What strategies do you use?

• Today is day two of Mental Health and Education week and we’re looking at the language of wellness. How do you get help when it comes to mental health? What does help look like, feel like, and sound like? Sometimes asking for help is easy, and sometimes it feels hard. Knowing how to ask for, and offer help to others is a really important skill. Understanding our resources – our own skills and strengths, our relationships, and the resources in our community, is a great place to start. Let’s spend some time today talking about what it means to help, how to ask for help, and where to go for help.

Wellness means finding balance in our physical, mental, and emotional health.   Understanding mental health supports can enhance your ability to manage stress and cultivate happiness.  The ODSS community has many supports available to students. Let’s prioritize our well-being together and talk about mental health this week!

• The ODSS Knitting Club has completed its first project! Check out the display case by the front office to see the finished product. Special thanks to Haidee Marinko for sewing all the pieces together. Our next project will be a giant crocheted daisy chain. Stop by room 224 next Wednesday at lunch to learn how to make a flower to add to the chain.

• Around the school, you will see red dresses. May 5th is Red Dress Day–a day to honour the memories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and to showcase the power and resilience of Indigenous women. In Canada, Indigenous women and girls are killed at a rate six times higher than that of women and girls who are not Indigenous, and these cases are often left unsolved because of police apathy and colonial systemic or overt racism. In the 2019 Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, there are several calls for justice which all Canadians can follow. Among them, is to denounce and speak out against violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people. We are all human, so treat everyone with kindness. Please look around the school to learn more.
