Posted October 13, 2023

Movie Night October 20231) School Council News:

Friday, October 20th is our first Panther Family Movie Night of the year. Admission is free and there will be popcorn, candy, and juice boxes available to purchase as a fundraiser for the Grade Six end-of-year trip. No childcare is available so children must be accompanied by an adult. People often bring folding chairs or sleeping bags for a cozy time. Hope to see you there!

Also, the Ponsonby Merch orders are open for one more week at https://ponsonbyappareloct.itemorder.com/shop/home/. Any funds raised will be used to purchase additional T-shirts for a student prize draw.

2) Boomerang Lunches Next Week

Waste Reduction Week is next week, October 16-20. Did you know that the average Canadian family wastes 140 kg of food a year, leading to a cost of over $1,700. A boomerang lunch is a lunch that has every piece of it returned to its source, home! In other words, everything in the lunch goes back home at the end of the day. No matter if it is leftover food, containers, recyclables or garbage, it all goes back to be washed, recycled, or disposed of at home. This can help your family see what food waste is usually thrown out at school and have a good conversation about ways we can help to reduce waste together. Do you have extra reusable containers or bags at home that you don’t use? We are accepting donations of reusable containers in good condition to share with students who want to try a new way of packing their lunch!

3) Hallowe’en Information:

We have chosen to celebrate Halloween here at Ponsonby with costume dress up and also black and orange. It is important to remember that Halloween is a day that is not observed by all students or staff. With this, it is considered a choice to participate as are all spirit days.

Note About Costumes:  It is important that no one uses identities or cultures as costumes in our school community. This includes appropriative costumes/cultural stereotypes (i.e., cultural garments), black/brown face, transphobic costumes (i.e., man dressed as a woman), body-shaming and objectifying costumes, and costumes that joke about situations that have caused harm (i.e., COVID pandemic). Such costumes perpetuate stereotypes and can cause harm that can further marginalize and oppress community members. If you have any questions or concerns about costumes, please contact Ms. Jones directly.
