Remembrance Day + SIB UPDATES for November 9th

Posted November 9, 2020

Dear SIB families,

Already it is the second week of November! Where is the time going? Here are this week’s important announcements:

#1 Poppies and Remembrance Day: On November 11th we will be commemorating Remembrance Day with a school wide Virtual Assembly using our classroom TVs. Every student will receive a poppy to remember the sacrifices made by brave Canadians and people around the world. We are not allowed to accept cash donations for the poppies at the school this year due to COVID protocols so families wishing to make a donation are encouraged to go the link: https://www.legion.ca/remembrance/the-poppy-campaign/donate-to-the-poppy-fund for more information on how to donate.

#2  Gr 7 & 8 Immunizations:

Gr 7: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Hepatitis B, HPV and Meningitis immunizations will be offered through booked appointments at Public Health rather than in schools as in past years. Public Health is making automated phone calls to all grade 7 students within the next couple of weeks to notify them. Visit wdgpublichealth.ca/immunizeGr7 for all the details.

Gr 8: Do you have a grade 8 student in your household who missed their Hepatitis B, HPV and/or Meningitis immunizations due to COVID-19 related school closures this past spring? Visit wdgpublichealth.ca/immunizeGr7 for more details and to book an appointment online.

#3 SIB School Council meets Tuesday Nov 17th at 6:30 pm on Google Meet. Click here for more info and the Google Meet link: https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/2020/11/09/school-council-meets-tuesday-nov-17-at-630pm/

#4 Progress Reports for all students will be going home to families on November 19th.

#5 Parent Teacher Interviews will be taking place Thursday November 26th and Friday November 27th: The sign up and format will remain the same as previous years however all interviews will need to be conducted using Google Meet or over the phone. Please stay tuned for more information on how to sign up.

#6 Stay Safe on our Streets: Just a reminder that the roads and sidewalks around our school are really busy before and after school. Please be diligent in your driving and your walking to and from school and please remind your children to obey all crossing guards and street patrollers to make sure everyone is safe. Thank you!

#7 Parent Information: Monitoring and Managing COVID-19, this is an important reminder from Public Health about how we can all work together to help stop the spread. Click the link for information: https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/2020/09/18/parent-information-monitoring-and-managing-covid-19/

#8 Absent or Late? Due to COVID protocols and to ensure every child is safe and accounted for, we ask that if you drop your child off at school anytime after 8:40AM to please take them to the front doors of the school. We have a greeter there for the first hour that can welcome your child in and make sure they safely get to class and are accounted for. After that first hour, you can call our school’s main number and a staff member will help them get to class safely.  If you know that your child(ren) will be absent or late please call the school 519-824-1442, as you can leave a message 24 hours a day. If you leave a message on our machine and you know that your child will be absent for longer than one day please leave those details as well so the office can be as accurate as possible. Thanks!

#9 DROP OFF AND PICK UP – PLEASE WEAR A MASK: To help ensure that everyone is safe at SIB we are asking that ALL students and parents/guardians please wear a mask at all times while on the school grounds (tarmac, sidewalks, grass areas, etc.) during DROP OFF (AM) and PICK UP (PM). We also encourage students to not arrive on the school grounds before 8:35am to help avoid unorganized large groupings. We have many people in this area and this will help protect everyone. Parents/guardians we also need your help reminding your children the importance of staying socially distanced from peers inside the school and outside on the school grounds. If we are all reminding students of this important measure it will really help. Thanks!

#10 Dress for the weather: Teachers K to Gr 8 are taking their students outside as much as possible and to be ready for that we are asking that students come to school prepared to be outside. The weather has turned to fall and wet/cold days are on their way, so please ensure that enough clothes are packed to get your child through the day. Also, we can now add a pair of dry indoor shoes to items brought to the school so no one has to have wet feet. So please feel free to pack an extra pair of shoes on those rainy days. Snow and rain won’t stop us from having fun and learning outside!

News regarding school is constantly being updated. SIB will continue to communicate with families step by step with information when it becomes available as we move through the school year. Please continue to check your email, twitter and our website https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/ daily for updates.

Stay a safe distance and stay positive!
