Meeting Minutes – Westminster Woods PS School Council

Meeting Date: Monday November 5th, 2018

Present: Cherise Johnson, Allison Stoffman, Tim Dickieson, Shana Waverman, Melissa Sikkes, Vanessa Luxem, Melanie Taylor, Dawn Nicholson, Jacquie Hulm-Mehagan, Angela Popofski, Anshu Khurana, Mahrukh Syed, Jennifer Li

Welcome: Meeting called to order by Cherise @ 6:31pm. Round table introductions.

Review and Acceptance of Past Minutes: Motion to accept the minutes from September’s meeting – by Jacquie and seconded by Melanie

Presentation – Settlement Worker form SWIS (Settlement Workers is School):

  • Supporting families new to the country, new to the school system, new to the city, or new to the neighborhood
  • Social support, work to connect families with resources & services in the area. Assistance with services related to language, healthcare, financial etc.

Principal’s Report:

Staffing:

  • French: Ally Vollrath new contract teacher junior core French

Information:

  • November 2018: Kindness Campaign
    • Week 1: Kindness
    • Week 2: Diversity
    • Week 3: Bullying Prevention
    • Week 4: Inclusion and Respect
    • School wide activities, assembly, announcements
  • LEGO League teams are running, competition in December
  • Intermediate volleyball, Zumba, drama club, French club
  • Progress reports go home on November 20th
  • Interviews scheduled for evening of November 29th and during PD day on November 30th, teachers may have more times available
  • Holiday concert scheduled for last week of December
  • EQAO scores are in. Overall school did well (above average) in all areas

Treasurers Report:

  • Motion to accept the treasurer’s report by Shana and seconded by Dawn

Fundraising Reports:

  • Bulbs raised $2400 for Kindie outdoor equipment – looking at buying trikes and into Kids’ Art Factory to create a creative space.
    • Most bulbs have been planted in front garden
  • $11,344.43 Laura Secord sales, spent approximately $1100 on prizes. All chocolate has been returned.
  • QSP – send home a magazine with a cover letter for online sales, sales go all year long. QSP collects all funds and distributes products
    • Motion to put proceeds towards community Building
  • Planet Bean – “Wake up the Woods” fundraiser – send newsletter and order sheet home, turnaround once orders are in is approximately one week. Could send this out at the start of next week (November 12) and with a deadline for return orders of November 26th
    • Motion to run fundraiser before year end – motioned by Melanie, seconded by Jennifer
    • Motion to put proceeds towards Community Building (i.e. Parent Involvement Night or Family Fun Night) – by Melanie seconded by Angela

Community Building:

  • Skate with the Storm – sold 62 tickets (no profit made). Insights into the lack of engagement – time of year, many events occurring, hockey season starting
    • Investigate the Puslinch arena for another skate night in the new year (Jan-Feb)
  • Mulitcultural night – November 15th
    • 15 tables set up (organized for electricity)
    • Dancing events planned

Playground & Greening:

  • Butterfly garden construction is complete! Final cost $28,564, company donated trees and perennials
    • Inspector complete – concerns with the placement of the stones, meeting set up to assess any necessary changes
    • Currently closed – to allow for plants to root and for inspection – will have a “Grand Opening” in the spring
  • Basketball Hoops
    • Paid Engineering company to assess the structural integrity of the wall
    • Permission to install one hoop (with pole, back board, hoop etc.) adjacent to the existing court – total cost for this would $1226.77 + installation and painting
    • Motion buy the basketball net and have it installed by Angela, seconded by Shana

Milk Program:

  • Milk is great! – no complaints
  • Booster Juice – on Fridays starting next term run by School Council, two sizes available
    • Trialing Booster Juice for Term 2
    • Send out survey for other Monday options

New Business:

  • Spirit wear – last date to order is Wednesday November 7th
    • Spirit wear is currently on sale
    • School council to buy extra t-shirts to potentially sell at School events – will vote
  • PIC meeting – cannabis overview, treated the same as alcohol, still working on how to adapt the rules for medicinal use
    • Looking for feedback from parents on www.ontario.ca by Dec 16th
    • November 10th people for education.ca
    • Nov 17th, digital Saturday event in Orangeville
    • Nov 7th, Social media fitness event at Centennial
