DownloadDecember has been a month filled with celebrations, time together and giving. Thank you to all of our families who donated to the Guelph Food Bank, Change for Charity, and our ‘Giving Tree’ was beautifully decorated with hats, mitts, and socks.  All items were donated to Hope House.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Important information about Kindergarten Registration this January

We’re getting ready to welcome our newest group of little learners to the school!

Kindergarten registration for the 2020/2021 school year takes place from January 7, 2020.

All Junior and Senior Kindergarten students new to the UGDSB must pre-register online. (SK students who are attending a UGDSB school for JK do not need to pre-register online).

Pre-registering online starting January 7 will save families time by allowing you to fill out important forms and documentation when it’s convenient for you.

Once you’ve pre-registered online, parents/guardians must go into their child’s home school before the Jan. 19th deadline, in order to drop off documentation and complete their registration.

Please note that all parents hoping to register their child for JK French Immersion must complete their registration document verification by Jan. 17 at 4 p.m.

For more information on how to register and the JK French Immersion selection process, please visit www.ugdsb.ca/jkregistration.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS

Thank you all for your support for the 1st part of the school year!   Our winter bazaar was again a great success and there will be more family activities and fundraisers in the works! We look forward to your continued volunteerism and support!  Remember to drive safely during the upcoming holiday season and see you next year.

Next School Council Meeting:

– Thursday, January 16th, 2020:  6:30 pm

– Childcare provided

PARKING LOT

Recently, there have been significantly more vehicles in the parking lot at drop off and pick up time.   This combined with slippery conditions and snow hills has made our parking lot less safe.

  1.  Please come in to the parking lot at pick up and drop off time only if it is absolutely necessary.
  2. As was established at the beginning of the year, please park on side streets and walk to the school to pick up and drop off children.
  3. Do not stop in the bus and taxi loading zone in front of the school entrance.
  4. Do not stop on the side near our parking lot entrance.   The bus is unable to enter when this is happening.

We realize this takes extra time, however, safety is still of utmost importance – particularly at the busy times of day.

STUDENT INFORMATION

Please notify the school if there are any changes in your child’s information such as your work numbers and emergency contact numbers. This is really important should we need to contact you during the day. Also, this is a reminder to please call the school attendance line (x 100) to notify the office if your child will be late or absent and if there is a change in pickup.

BE PREPARED

With the unpredictable winter weather, it is particularly important to ensure the children have adequate clothing to wear when they are out on the playground during recess. Please help your child come prepared for the winter weather by providing them with boots, winter jackets and snow pants, warm mitts, scarves and hats. Remind them to check the lost and found if anything goes missing while at school and parents are welcome to check the lost & found at any time. Please check in at the office first.  The Lost and Found is located outside the office.

 SAFETY PATROLS

At minus 25 Celsius (including the wind chill), safety patrol duty is reduced to the last five minutes of the morning scheduled time and the first five minutes of the afternoon scheduled time. Parents and patrols should check the local radio stations or internet weather reports for temperature readings.

INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

The months of January and February can bring some of our worst weather.  To determine whether schools are open or closed check the board or school website: http://www.ugdsb.on.ca/ and https://www.ugdsb.ca/winegard/ and click on the yellow school bus located at the top of the home page. PLEASE NOTE: On days when buses/taxis are cancelled, unless otherwise informed, the school will be open and a regular school program will be offered.

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

There are several exciting reading opportunities coming up for students and families at William C. Winegard! First, on January 27th we will be celebrating Family Literacy Day with various reading activities planned throughout the school that week. In February we will be launching the annual Forest of Reading program. Over the course of the program, students in JK to Grade 2 have the opportunity to read (or have read to them) 10 new picture books by Canadian authors. Students in Grades 3 to 8 may choose to join one of four book clubs where they will also be reading new books by Canadian authors and selecting a favourite book from various categories. Finally, on February 19th, our school is helping to celebrate the inaugural “I Read Canadian Day.” This is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people wherein our entire nation has been challenged to “Read Canadian” for 15 minutes and to share their experience at their library, in their school, with their families and friends, or on social media.

MESSAGE FROM FOOD AND FRIENDS PROGRAM

With the holidays quickly approaching, why not give a gift with special meaning? This year, instead of purchasing a gift, why not honour your teacher with a donation to the Children’s Foundation’s Food & Friends program? The Children’s Foundation would be pleased to provide the individual(s) with a card to notify them that you have made the donation in honour of them for this holiday season. Go to https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx?name=E920301QE&id=11 to make your donation today, and please specify our school as the recipient of the donation. Thank you for bringing healthy food to hungry minds!

Trees for Tots https://www.childrensfoundation.org/ways-to-help/events/trees-for-tots: On Saturday, January 11, happy volunteers will pick-up your tree (for a minimum donation of $10) which will be chipped and returned to nature through local naturalization projects at Ignatius Jesuit Centre. ALL FUNDS RAISED go directly to help build brighter futures for the children in our community. Register by January 3rd https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx?name=E920301QE&id=56
