Innovative Passion Projects

Posted May 15, 2018

On May 10th, the intermediate students at Aberfoyle Public School celebrated their learning during Education Week by sharing their Innovative Passion Projects with their parents, family and friends. The Innovative Passion Project is an independent project that allowed the students to inquire about something that they are passionate about.  It was a 6 month inquiry based project that tested the students’ ability to think critically and creatively in order to create a new, innovative artifact that will improve our current society.

This project focused on 21st Century Competencies and allowed the Aberfoyle students to:

  • ask open-ended, higher level questions
  • think critically, creatively, and innovatively
  • design and manage their own project as an entrepreneur
  • self-direct their own learning
  • build prototypes and reshape thinking to improve their ideas
  • persevere and overcome challenges
  • communicate thinking effectively
  • contribute to society by creating something to improve our current society (global citizenship)

Some examples of Innovative Passion Projects included: a more efficient zamboni that cleans the ice faster and more efficiently, retractable hockey boards to prevent concussions, weather predicting technology that analyzes clouds, water filtration system to feed animals more efficiently, food sensitivity cookbooks, a carbon fiber car chassis to prevent injuries in car crashes, and monofins to increase a swimmer’s ability to train.

The Innovative Passion Project evening was a huge success! The students should all be commended for their immense effort and dedication to the project. Thank you to the Aberfoyle community for everyone’s commitment to this endeavour!
