Updates For November 1-5, 2021

Posted November 4, 2021

Congratulations on reaching the month of November Alma PS families!  We’ve enjoyed two great months together and cannot wait to see what comes next.  Thanks again to families for screening your children daily and for getting them checked out if they are feeling unwell.  It’s creating a safer environment at school and helping protect our community.  Thanks too for encouraging mask-wearing and social distancing, even when it’s hard.  The students are doing well and that’s largely in part to families and staff encouraging them along the way.  Keep up the great work!  Here are the 5 things you need to know this week:

1 – The Wellness Works program through the UGDSB, formerly known as the Umbrella Project, focuses on monthly attributes.  This month’s focus is kindness.  While students will be learning more about it at school this month, especially during Bullying Prevention Week from November 22-26, please take a moment to highlight the importance of kindness at home and in our community.  Kindness Matters!

2- We had two great events here on Monday of this week.  First, we had 48 entries into our virtual pumpkin carving contest.  Students and their families did an amazing job.  Congratulations to our prize winners!  A special thanks goes out to School Council who provided the prizes again this year and also donated a treat bag for every child in this school.  On Monday we also celebrated our first Polka Dots, Stripes & Checks day.  Students dressed up in a variety of fun patterns, representing the many diverse qualities they bring to the world.  We took advantage of being able to meet as a whole school outside.  Mr. Boyce read “Be You”, a book about embracing your uniqueness and sharing your awesomeness with the world.  Mrs. Scott and Student Council coordinated an event where students gathered a fallen stick and decorated it in a way that represents them.  These sticks will be gathered and turned into a tree-shaped display in our front lobby soon to showcase how “tree-mendously unique” we all are.  Stay tuned for more upcoming events from our hard-working Student Council!

3 – Our next School Council Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 11 from 6:30-8:00 PM virtually.  If you’re not already on the email list to get the link, please email School Council at [email protected].  All are welcome to attend!

4 – More information will be coming from the Board about Report Cards and Interviews soon.  Teachers have been working hard on summarizing student progress and thinking of the next steps to work on.  Report card access will once again be done digitally.  You can access them on November 16.  There will also be a PA Day on November 26 so please mark that on your calendars.

5- The Optimists are hard at work creating safe and fun holiday events for our children.  They asked that I let you know that the Christmas parade is on December 19th at 2 PM.  They are also doing a special event called Santa’s Drive-Thru where you can pick up a take-home package.  More information can be found at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf4XLrTETnEnoZrnPHrSH3H7GJ0MoPPsSU1nw_0FfLUf0texQ/viewform.

Thanks as always for all that you do to make Alma PS a great place to learn.  As always, if you have any questions, please reach out.  We’re here to help!
