Updates For September 26-30, 2022

Posted September 27, 2022

Hello Alma Families!  Here are the 5 things you need to know today to keep up to date this week:

  1. Tomorrow our school, along with others in the Board, will be focusing on the importance of caring correctly for head injuries and concussions.  Students are invited to wear purple in hopes of reminding us that if we are hit, we need to sit.  For those who don’t have purple, that’s fine, as we have purple yarn for students to make a bracelet if they wish.  Thanks for reminding your child of the importance of telling someone if they hit their head so that we can follow up with them and you as needed.  Thanks!

  1. This week our school and Board have been focusing on Truth and Reconciliation and considering how we can best listen, learn from and work with our Indigenous community.  Students have been reading books, having books read to them, completing activities and showcasing their knowledge so far, knowing that we still have much to learn.  On Friday, the UGDSB is holding Orange Shirt Day, a time when students and staff wear orange to honour this important focus.  As a way of showing support, all students will be provided with an orange button which has been purchased as a way of supporting Geronimo’s Dream.  Geronimo Henry, a residential school survivor, has a dream of ensuring people know about the hardships experienced at residential schools and hopes to build a memorial to this end so that we never forget the lessons we need to learn from these events.  You can learn more about Geronimo’s Dream here:  https://geronimosdream.weebly.com/.  Buttons will be handed out to all students on Friday.

  1. Tomorrow night is our Open House at the school.  The Alma Optimists will be providing food that was pre-ordered at the back of the school.  Food will begin being served at 5:30 PM and this will continue until 7:30 PM.  Please bring a lawn chair or blanket and visit with your friends and enjoy some time with our amazing school community outside.  If it is raining, we will eat in the gym but please bring your chairs or blankets as well so we can have somewhere to sit.  Classrooms will open at 6:30 PM to meet your child’s teacher and see their learning space.  Classes will be open until 7:30 PM.  We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the school!

  1. Please see the following message from our newly elected School Council Chair, Paula O’Donnell:

Hello!  I wanted to introduce myself as the new Chair of our School Council for this 2022/23 school year.  September 15 was our first School Council meeting and I’m excited to share with you our council positions for this year:

Chair – Paula O’Donnell

Secretary – Veronique Dann

Treasurer – Betty-Sue Driedger

Your main source of information about what is happening at Alma P.S. will be the 5 Things emails that our principal, Mr. Boyce, sends out each week.  The information I post in our existing Facebook group will come from those emails.  I’ll also put up some reminders the day before special days or events happening in our school.  You can find a link to that group here:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/almaps.

Group members will not be able to post or comment on this Facebook page. Instead, if you have questions I can help with, feel free to contact me directly as your Chair at a special email setup for this at [email protected]. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out.  I look forward to connecting with you soon.  We look forward to seeing you at the next School Council meeting which will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2022.  If you would like to be added to the School Council email list, please let me know or contact the school office.

Have an awesome day!

Paula O’Donnell

  1. We are excited to announce that we have hired our new half time grade 1/2 teacher, Todd Gibbons, who will be starting on Monday, October 3.  We look forward to having him join our team and getting to know our amazing school community.

As an additional item, please see the flyer sent to your email which has information about upcoming Continuing Education opportunities from the UGDSB.

Thanks as always for your continued support.  If there’s anything the school can do to help, please let us know.  We’re here to help!

Take care,

Jason Boyce
