Updates For December 12-16, 2022

Posted December 16, 2022

Hello Alma Families!  Here are the 6 things you need to know today to keep up to date this week:

  1. Our Holiday Concert is coming up on Tuesday, December 20.  We will be inviting families to join us at 6:30 PM.  Please have children here in their classrooms for 6:15 PM sharp so that the concert can begin promptly at 6:30 PM.  We will also be having a dress rehearsal at 11:30 AM as we do our first walk-through of our full performance together.  If you cannot make the evening performance for some reason, visitors are welcome to attend the daytime show. This performance may have some stops and starts in it as we adjust to doing everything together for the first time, with this being the first concert ever for many of our students.  Students will be watching the performance during the day and remaining in their classrooms for the evening performance to leave enough room for visitors to attend.

  1. On Wednesday, December 21 School Council will be hosting the Alma PS Spaghetti Dinner.  Thanks to the many families who offered to donate items for the dinner.  You can drop them off at the school before the event.  We will be eating in the gym at 1:00 PM.  A special thanks goes out to Geddes Street Market in Elora for the donation of the rolls for this event.

  1. Our School Council is hosting a Food Drive collecting items for the Centre Wellington Food Bank.  Each class is keeping a tally of items brought in and the School Council has generously offered to donate a pizza for the class who brings in the most items.  Items will be collected until Monday, December 19th.  Then they will be dropped off at the food bank on Tuesday.  Items most needed at this time can be found by scrolling down to find the list on this website page:  http://www.cwfoodbank.org/.

  1. There are some special Student Council days coming up next week.  On Monday we will be having Cozy Sweater Day.  On Tuesday it is holiday colour or clothing day.  On Wednesday Student Council will be hosting a holiday craft day and Thursday they will be hosting a holiday games day on our final Comfy Cozy Day of 2022.

  1. One of the many great things about Alma PS is our small hill for sledding. As long as everyone follows the rules it is a lot of fun. Each year we discuss the rules with our students. Please take a moment to review the rules with your child. If parents wish their child to wear a helmet while sledding they would need to send in a  properly fitted (as per manufacturer’s guidelines) and properly worn CSA approved hockey helmet or snow sport helmet certified by a recognized safety standards association. The wearing of a helmet is recommended by Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education but it is not required. This is a parent decision. If you choose to send in a helmet please clearly mark the helmet with your child’s name and speak to them about wearing the helmet when sledding.

Crazy Carpet Rules

  • Carpets must be in good repair (no jagged edges). Tell a teacher if it is not.
  • Only seated forward or on your knees is permitted.
  • One person on a carpet at a time.
  • Only going down the designated areas one at a time.
  • The bottom of the hill must be cleared before the next person slides down the hill.
  • Only walk up the edges of the hill in the designated areas.
  • Only crazy carpets are to be used on the hill.
  • No jumps are allowed.

  1. In case you missed it, in last week’s email we sent instructions about the UGDSB’s updated Volunteer Policy and the requirement for Vulnerable Sector Checks through the OPP.  This important documentation is required for all volunteer positions, including attending on field trips.  It is wise to plan ahead so your Police Check can be ordered online in time for you to volunteer in the new year.  For further information please email [email protected] to receive a copy of the required forms.

Thanks as always for your continued support.  If there’s anything the school can do to help, please let us know.  We’re here to help!

Take care,

Jason Boyce
