Updates For January 16-20, 2023

Posted January 17, 2023

Hello Alma Families!  Here are the 6 things you need to know today to keep up to date this week:

  1. IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Our pizza day that was scheduled for today’s no bus day will be rescheduled for tomorrow, January 18, 2023.  Students will receive pizza at second break on Wednesday instead this week to fit this missed day in.  Thanks for your flexibility.

  1. Kindergarten pre-registration for new students happens online from January 10-27, 2023.  Children born in 2019 may attend Junior Kindergarten and children born in 2018 may attend Senior Kindergarten.  For more information, please visit https://www.ugdsb.ca/kindergarten/

  1. Each year we have several drills, including fire drills, severe weather drills, evacuation drills and lockdown drills.  Staff have been discussing this routine with their students, especially those who are younger or newer to this habit.  During a lockdown drill, the students remain in a quiet space in their locked classrooms with curtains and windows shut.  They wait until the drill is over and then they return to their usual activities.  While drills can sometimes be unsettling, it is an important part of our routine in school and we do our best to coach students through them.  This season we will be having a lockdown drill on Wednesday, January 18th.  We will review our drills again in the spring.

  1. There is a PD Day on Friday, January 27 for teachers to work on report cards.  There will be no school that day.

  1. We have been blessed to have a major project granted to us from the UGDSB SHSM program focusing on preparing students for the Specialist High Skills Major programs at Centre Wellington District High School.  While things will be finalized later in February, we are starting to receive things like a new Cubicon 3D Printer and 5 new iMac computers.  We will also be receiving a full green screen and podcasting studio for students to learn with.  We are building a media lab within our learning commons and we are excited to see how these new learning opportunities work with the investments made last year when the TV upgrades were installed.  Having these tools will help students be best prepared for their transition to Elora PS as well as CWDHS.  Our students are truly learning not for school but for life!

  1. Our current pizza order runs until January 24.  Our next round of pizza orders from Vito’s Pizza is now live on School Cash Online.  Orders will be closing on January 22.  This round will run from January 31 to March 28.  Please remember that if your child is not in attendance on a pizza day, leftover slices will be shared with a sibling where possible, or they will be considered a donation to the school.  If a pizza day falls on a snow day, there will be an attempt to reschedule the pizza day and changes will be communicated with families.  You can place your pizza order or order a new milk card if need be here:  https://ugdsb.schoolcashonline.com/

Thanks as always for your continued support.  If there’s anything the school can do to help, please let us know.  We’re here to help!

Take care,

Jason Boyce
