Hyland Heights News for October 1, 2021

Posted October 1, 2021

Good Evening Parents & Guardians,

It’s been a busy week here at Hyland Heights. Yesterday marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. But in our community and school, Truth must be told and Reconciliation must be worked for every day. Institutions need to be held accountable not just on September 30 but every single day. We encourage our community to review the UGDSB’s Indigenous Education policy, which will guide the school’s work going forward and help us to learn and unlearn the truths of colonialism. https://www.ugdsb.ca/board/policy/policy-519-indigenous-education-first-nations-metis-inuit/

We also marked Rowan’s Law Day in honour of Rowan Stringer. Rowans Law focuses on raising awareness about concussions in sport. We learned facts about concussions and also how to prevent them.

The School Council met last month virtually and elections were held. Our next School Council will be on October 4th at 6pm virtually. Please attend if you can, we are always looking for more parents/guardians to help our school be the best that it can be. Please follow our School Council Facebook page for more information.

This year is certainly different. Usually we have an open house to have parents meet their child’s teacher. This year this is not possible, teachers have created slideshows and/or short videos to host a virtual meet the teacher night. Teachers should have already reached out with materials to support a virtual open house. If not, please contact your child’s teacher.

All staff and students must self-screen every day before attending school. To help meet this requirement, the government recently released an updated COVID-19 school and child care screening tool

One last reminder, please avoid dropping off school lunches to the front office. If you do come to the front door to pick up a child, please be patient as we may already be assisting a child or on the phone. We will answer the door as soon as we are able.

Have a wonderful weekend.
