Hyland Heights News for May 27th

Posted May 27, 2022

Good afternoon Hawk Families,

Summer is on its way.  Students and staff looked great in their beach and summer wear today. Although summer is around the corner, we want to remind all students and their families that we have a lot of learning left to go this school year. Please try to remind your child that it is important to stick to good school routines so they are prepared for learning (e.g., get a good night’s rest, eat breakfast, arrive at school on time, and try their best to engage in learning and be kind). Following rules and being respectful to others is important to keep our school a safe place to be. Thanks for your support.

On June 2nd, our school is a polling station for the provincial election. We will have a security guard at our front entrance helping to direct voters.

During the evening on June 2nd, we also have our School Council MacMillian’s pick up. Remember all items need to be picked up that evening as they are frozen and we do not have space to store them. Pick up will happen outside the library from the parking lot. The library entrance is just to the left of the daycare entrance. Members of School Council will be there to help guide parents. More reminders and details from the School Council will be coming soon.

Our last virtual School Council meeting of the year is on June 6th at 6pm. New members are always welcome. Please call the school for the meeting code or follow School Council on Facebook for the meeting code.

Please remember to call the school if your child will be late or absent. Our first priority is to ensure the safe arrival of all of our students each day. By calling in and notifying the school of your child’s absence, this speeds the process along and alerts us of any concerns sooner. Thank you for your support.

June 3rd is a PD day. There is no school for students. Staff will be working on class placement for the 22/23 school year and assessment and evaluation.

We are hiring for lunch supervisors for the 22/23 school year! We require individuals who are caring, energetic, and have the ability to ensure the safety of our students.  The position requires a commitment of approximately 80 minutes per day ( 40 minute nutrition breaks:  20 minutes eating and 20 minutes outdoor recess time). This is a paid position, $15.00/hr. Your responsibilities include:  monitoring lunchrooms and outside recess. Our two nutrition breaks/ yard times are from 10:50- 11:30am and again from 1:00-1:40pm. Lunchroom supervisors are required to have a criminal record background check and we can provide you with a letter to take to the OPP station. If you want to be part of a great school community with wonderful students, please call vice principal, Mrs.Papavasiliou (PapaV) at 519-925-3745 ext 224. Similarly, if you know someone who would be fantastic in this role, please pass this information along to them. Thank you.

Please remember that grade seven and eight students are the only students who are allowed to leave school property for lunch. They must, however, have permission from a parent/guardian to do so.  All other students in grades K-6 must stay on property for lunch.

Please ensure that all dogs stay off school property. We have a number of students who are scared of dogs, no matter the size. Thank you for your cooperation.

Reminders:

Grade 6/7/8 Summer Learning Opportunity:

Upper Grand DSB offers Grade 6, 7, and 8 students requiring additional support with the Ontario curriculum, particularly in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy, an opportunity to participate in an 8-day non-credit remediation program.

The program is intended for students whose achievement of expectations in Grade 6, 7or 8 Language and/or Mathematics indicates that they are likely to experience difficulty in the next school year. Students who are achieving a Level 2 or below in Language and/or Mathematics at their grade level, and are recommended by their Principal, are eligible to participate in the program. Parents of Grade 6, 7, and 8 can contact their home school to indicate their interest in the program. Please contact your child’s teacher first to see if they will be a good fit and then Mrs. Papavasiliou will call you to register your child.

These support programs are half-day in length so it is possible for students to participate in both the literacy and the numeracy support program. Session Dates: Tuesday, July 5th – Thursday, July 14th, 2022. Literacy and Numeracy support programs are being offered at John F Ross CVI (Guelph) or Grant Evans Education Centre (Orangeville). All programs are dependent on sufficient enrolment. Transportation is not provided.

COVID Screening Tool & Mask Guidance:

The Ministry provides  COVID-19 guidance; the best and most current information is embedded within the screening tool. The tool also accounts for individuals who tested positive in the last 90 days, who have traveled etc. COVID 19 School Screening

Highlights to current changes:

Masking is now no longer required, but encouraged by the UGDSB. There are exceptions  for a few specific circumstances. Please ensure that your child wears a mask if they fall into the following groups:

  • For 6-10 days after a self-isolation period of five days after having COVID-19
  • If you are identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19
  • In public spaces, including schools and child cares, for the first 14 days

Please continue to use the COVID Screening tool daily before your child attends school https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ . It will continue to be important for students with illness of any kind to remain home while they have symptoms.

Have a great weekend and we’ll see everyone back on Monday.
