Spirit Days – Dec 19-22, 2022
Dear Families,
A wide variety of multinational festivals and holidays are celebrated around the world and within our very own classrooms in the month of December. At Hyland Heights we celebrate LIGHT during the holiday season. We have chosen to highlight a few celebrations with spirit days during the week leading up to Winter Break.
Remember the last day of school this year is Thursday, Dec 22! Friday Dec 23rd is a Board Designated Holiday.

Mon Dec. 19th | Blue and White day celebrating Hanukkah
Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of lights lasting eight days and this year it is being celebrated from Dec 18-26. On each night of the celebration a new candle is lit in the menorah. Blue and White are the traditional colours associated with Hanukkah. |
Tue Dec.20th | Red, Green and Black day honouring Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an ancient harvest celebration from December 26th to January 1st. Kwanzaa has seven principles to live by and each day focuses on a different principle. During the seven days of Kwanzaa, celebrants light one new candle per day (three red, one black and three green) |
Wed Dec.21st | Red, Green and Gold Day – Christmas/Winter Solstice
Christmas is celebrated by Christians on the 25th of December and honours the birth of Jesus. Wed, Dec 21st is the Winter Solstice – the shortest day of the year – which is celebrated by many cultures around the world and is also known as Yule. This day welcomes the return of light (our Sun) and signifies the beginning of longer daylight hours. |
