Feb 2, 2023 – Hyland Heights Parent Update

Posted February 2, 2023

Dear Parents and Guardians, please see below for some updates from Hyland Heights

Black History Month – Black Heritage, Black Brilliance, Black Futures – Feb 2023

At our first school assembly our Black Student Alliance presented an introduction to the activities at HHES during February to recognize Black History Month.  We read, sang and learned a little bit about Martin Luther King Jr.  This month and for the rest of this school year, our BSA will be in classrooms doing read alouds, drumming and dance activities and sharing knowledge about Black achievements and Black culture.  They will be doing daily announcements and will be organizing an assembly for later in the month.

Next week, we have a Dance Presentation by GET which is a community-based group (Gathering, Evolving, Transforming) who are offering this presentation for Black History Month through their CEP (Cultural Education Program) and they focus on Black Joy.  We will be flying the Pan-African Flag for the month of February.

Rock, Paper, Scissors to solve small problems

Also at our assembly, we have introduced a conflict resolution strategy to solve small problems like, “whose turn is it next?  I want to be IT first!!  That was on the line!!”.  Students were treated to 4 skits put on by Mr. Findlayter’s grade 5/6 class to explain how and when to use RPS to solve problems.  If the problems were bigger, students are asked to get an adult at school to help.  Try RPS at home and see if it works for your family!!  We are going to have a school wide RPS competition and the winning class will become our RPS representatives!  They will help promote RPS at HHES!
