SHELBURNE, Ontario – Grade 7 and 8 students at Hyland Heights Elementary School have embarked on a class project to raise awareness for four causes they hold close to their hearts.

Earlier this year, teacher James Palmer asked the class to give a brief presentation about a topic that was important to them. Once all the presentations were complete, it was clear to Palmer that some students had a passionate connection to specific causes because of their personal experiences.

After asking the class if they wanted to try and do something more to support some of the causes, their awareness project was born.

After voting as a class, the four causes that were chosen to be the subjects of this project were epilepsy research, adoption awareness, farmers in India and reducing waste through the use of reusable water bottles.

Students planned and built a video presentation for the school and designed reusable water bottles, one for each cause, which will be printed and available for sale. To further advertise the water bottles, students created posters, videos, announcements and flyers.

The class has set the goal of selling 100 water bottles at $10 each, to get people in the community talking about the causes and learning about why they are important.
