PMPS Weekly Update April 13th

Posted April 13, 2023

Good Evening Mustang Families,

It was a great week here at PMPS. The weather was beautiful and this means that our playgrounds were able to be opened up. A reminder to all that running shoes must be worn on the climbers for safety. Our students and staff got outside and took advantage of our outdoor learning. Although next week the weather is expected to change, we are hopeful the warmer weather will be here to stay real soon.

We hosted the Chef French program over two days this week at PMPS. The students  loved it and spoke of it very highly, all while learning more about French culture and language.  The baking was delicious! We hope your child(ren) came home and spoke about the program with you. Much appreciation goes to our parent/guardian volunteers. We could not have hosted this program without your participation.

The Public Health program, “You’re the Chef” for our grade ⅞ students starts next Wednesday for the next 6 weeks. Please note only students who signed up may attend and we have no more space. We are looking at running another program before the end of the school year. If this is not possible, we will definitely run it next year for a different grade cohort. Students, please remember to bring reusable containers for leftovers.

A big thanks goes to our Pride Mustangs for recognizing the International Day of Pink. They made pink bracelets for everyone. What a great idea to make sure that everyone was equitably included in the day. Ms. Penney’s class also made an  informative display about Ramadan. This is great learning for our students and staff. Our hallways are full of primary students’ art work. Students are learning that art communicates our ideas. Please save June 15th in your calendars for our Arts and Family Fun Night. More information to come.

Reminders:

Ramadan: We want to wish all of our Mustang families who celebrate Ramadan a joyful celebration. Our school has a duty to accommodate for learning, assessments, recess, physical education and sport, lunch and eating, and prayer during Ramadan. We have a multifaith prayer room at our school. It is located in room 101. If your family recognizes Ramadan and needs any of the above accommodations please give me, Mrs. Papavasiliou or your child’s teacher.

Milk Sales: Our wonderful Student Council continues to sell milk.  The milk costs $1.00 each. Milk sale profits support our Student Council.

Attendance Support in the UGDSB: The UGDSB are continuing to share information to help families support their child’s attendance at school. Below are some tips you can try that involve the routines and the environment at home.

  • Practice consistent bedtime and morning routines with your child.
  • Parents can model the same routine at home, as it helps students stick to the routine of coming to school each day.
  • Having a set schedule for sleep and nutrition is key to a good morning and feeling good about coming to school.
  • Preparing for school at night so that the morning is less hectic can be helpful.  Organizing clothing, packing backpacks and including favourite foods can be reassuring.
  • Putting out clothes and making lunch the night before can help get your child out the door in the morning.
  • If your child does refuse to attend school, try having no screens/devices during the time when they are at home. Make staying home as boring as possible! Shutting down the home Internet can be helpful if this is a draw for your child to stay at home.
  • Creating an environment conducive for improved sleep hygiene (e.g. dark room, quiet, sound machine, light in morning, consistent bed and wake times).
  • Ensuring at least 30 minutes of screen-free time before bed and removing all electronics from bedrooms before bed can be helpful.
  • Limiting screen time before bed is key to winding-down and getting a great night’s sleep!
