PMPS Weekly Update March 30th

Posted March 30, 2023

Good Evening Mustang Families,

We had a great week here at PMPS. Our basketball teams are busy practicing and are anticipating their first games next week. Our grade sevens participated in a workshop about human trafficking with FTP, our choir continues to practice, our art expressions club displayed their beautiful art, our kindergartens are learning all about spring,  and our staff participated in professional development about using student data to inform small group instruction and examined new resources for math instruction.

Please look for our School Council’s hanging basket fundraiser to be coming home next week. Thank you to all of our families who supported our recent intermediate trip fundraiser. Our students worked hard to reduce the cost of their trip by selling these treats and we’re happy for your support.

A reminder that it is a good idea to pack an extra pair of pants in childrens’ backpacks as the snow melts and we have a return to mud. This avoids us having to call home for a pant request during the day.

Our Twitter account is full of updates, please check it out: @margaret_ps. I update our website regularly as well: www.ugdsb.ca/PrincessMargaret/ . Please take a moment once and while and check out all of our great news!

Reminders:

Ramadan: We want to wish all of our Mustang families who celebrate Ramadan a joyful celebration. Our school has a duty to accommodate for learning, assessments, recess, physical education and sport, lunch and eating, and prayer during Ramadan. We have a multifaith prayer room at our school. It is located in room 101. If your family recognizes Ramadan and needs any of the above accommodations please give me, Mrs. Papavasiliou or your child’s teacher.

Milk Sales: Our wonderful Student Council continues to sell milk.  The milk costs $1.00 each. Milk sale profits support our Student Council.

You’re the Chef: We are excited to offer our grade ⅞ students an opportunity to participate in the program “You’re the Chef”. This is a program developed and supported by our Public Health Unit. The goal of the program is to help students develop the skills and confidence necessary to prepare and enjoy healthy recipes, emphasizing vegetables and fruit.

The program will run on the following Wednesdays after school in our own PMPS staffroom kitchen: April 19th, April 26th and May 3rd, May 10th, May 17th, and May 24th from 3-430pm. We have two amazing volunteers who will be running the program, Betty Harmany  and Chris Cox. Classroom teachers will have permission forms to offer any interested students. Both permission forms need to be returned to Mrs. Papavasliou in the office by the morning of April 5th. If we do not have enough interested grade ⅞ teachers, we will offer the program to our grade 6 students as well. We can take 12 students for the program, but are hopeful to run it again before the end of the school year.

We also need 2-3 additional volunteers to help with the program as well. Volunteers must have a completed vulnerable sector check through the OPP and complete our volunteer agreement. We can write a letter that you can provide to the OPP so the cost of the VSC is free. Currently the time to complete a VSC is 1-2 weeks and it must be completed before the start of the program on the 19th. Please reach out to Mrs. Papavasiliou to confirm your interest in helping with the program (519-941-3731 ext 223). Thank you in advance.

Emergency Lunch and Recess Supervisors Still Needed:  If you love working with wonderful children, who are enthusiastic, fun and engaging, Princess Margaret wants you as a Lunchroom/Yard Supervisor. We have an urgent need for supplies while our regular staff are away. We are currently hiring for this position for the 2022/2023 school year. We require individuals who are caring, energetic, and have the ability to ensure the safety and security of our students.  The position requires a commitment of approximately 80 minutes per day (two 40 minute nutrition breaks:  20 minutes eating and 20 minutes outdoor recess time). This is a paid position, minimum wage per hour.  Your responsibilities include: monitoring lunchrooms and outside recess. Our two nutrition breaks/ yard times are from 10:20- 11am and again from 12:30-1:10pm. Lunchroom supervisors are required to have a vulnerable sector criminal record background check. If you want to be part of a great school community with wonderful students, please call Principal, Andrea Papavasiliou at 519-941-3731 ext 223. Similarly, if you know someone who would be fantastic in this role, please pass this information along to them. Thank you.

We will see everyone tomorrow for another great day of learning.

Andrea Papavasiliou, Principal
