Principal’s Message – October 7, 2022

Posted October 7, 2022

There are so many things that make me smile each day.  This week I was so happy to see 78 Spencer runners from grades 1 to 8 traveling to the County Cross Country Meet.  Joining with teams from 13 schools from across Dufferin County, our team showed amazing spirit and skill.  Spencer came in second with 6 of our students placing in the top five in their race.  There were many top 10 finishes and personal bests.  Thanks so much to Ms. McLellan for coaching the team and doing all the paperwork so we were able to attend.  Thank you Mlle. Brown for coaching and to Mrs. Edwards for coming to support the team.  It was also fantastic to have so many of our parents join us to help.

It is also great walking around the school and seeing all the learning that is happening.  Our kindergarten and primary students are great detectives as they are “learning the code” that they need to become solid readers.  Our grade 4s have been working together to build solar ovens, inspired by the promise of sunbaked s’mores.  Our intermediates have been focusing on gratitude as a way of promoting mental health.

Some new opportunities are also on the horizon for our kiddos.  Next week the tryouts for the junior and intermediate volleyball teams continue.  Staff are looking at hosting intramurals at lunch so more students are able to enjoy playing.  Choir is beginning on Thursday for students in grades 3 to 8.  Students in grades 4 to 8 who love math are invited to participate in the University of Waterloo Math Competition (they need to see Ms. Mangos for details.)  Additionally students have been hard at work under the watchful eye of Mrs. MacLarnon planning for a variety of Makerspace clubs. Thank you to our amazing staff for offering so many opportunities to our students.

As we approach the Thanksgiving long weekend I would like to remind you that the school is closed on Monday.  On behalf of the staff, I would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you and your family have a wonderful weekend.
