Westwood Back to School Plan

Posted September 1, 2020

Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

We are looking forward to welcoming all of our new and returning students back to Westwood P.S. this September!

As you are aware, the Upper Grand District School Board has put extensive plans in place for the school year.  Our school has now created plans that include both operational changes (how we manage the people and resources within the school) and health and safety changes (our response to the COVID pandemic).  In many cases, these changes are significantly different to how we used to operate.  We hope this document will help answer your questions about the specifics on the opening day and first week of school.

Please also look through our board Parent Handbook, for more detailed information about the changes for this school year.  There is also a link to the Board Website and the Parent Question and Answer (Q&A) page.

Staggered Entry

We will be having a “staggered entry” for all students this year. This means that all students will come to school with approximately half of their classmates on alternating days for the first two weeks of school, starting on Thursday September 10, 2020.  This will allow us to carefully review and establish safety routines with fewer students in the building.  Students will attend school as per the chart below:

What to Bring to School

Please keep your child’s personal items to a minimum!  To support a safe and comfortable environment, students are asked to bring the following items clearly labelled with the student’s name:

  • Knapsack or tote bag for personal belongings
  • Face masks – they may need more than one
  • Personal water bottle
  • Seasonal outdoor wear (we are not requiring ‘indoor shoes’ at this time)
  • Only those items that are necessary for the day (e.g., pencil case, calculator, pens, pencils)
  • Students may bring their own devices, but they must be wiped by the student upon entry and before leaving at the end of the day
  • Selected items identified by the classroom teacher

Note: Hooks and lockers will not be used for the 2020-2021 school year. Students will be required to keep all personal belongings with them throughout the day.

Note: Additional information will be provided to families about how the school will help students manage winter boots and coats when cold weather arrives.

How Will I Know What Class My Child Is In?

Your child’s teacher will call on September 8th or 9th.  Aside from introducing themselves, they will confirm start date information, provide class information and let you know where to meet on the first day.

After the call (or message), if you have questions, please make your way to the front door of the school on your designated first day and check in with the information table.

Before Coming to School

COVID-19 Screening:

  • All parents must screen their children every day before leaving home for symptoms of COVID-19.  If there are symptoms, children need to stay home from school.  If COVID-19 is suspected, testing is recommended.
  • Link to self-screening tool

Riding the Bus:

  • Students will wear masks while on the bus. Special circumstances may dictate that a student cannot wear a mask – please contact the school if needing to discuss this matter. There will be a seating plan for students riding the bus. The operator of the bus will be wearing PPE.
  • The school board does not decide the COVID-19 safety protocols for student transportation. For more information, visit the STWDSTS website at https://stwdsts.ca
  • If you are opting out of taking the bus, please ensure your choice is updated with Transportation.

First Day Arrival

Thursday September 10 is the first day for students with the last name A-L, and Friday September 11 is the first day for students with the last name M-Z (see two week chart above).

If your child takes the bus:

Your child will be greeted by a staff member who will unload busses one at a time.  That staff member will ensure students know where they are meeting their teacher.  They will also be shown how to find non-classroom staff who are available to help them if they become unsure of where to go.

All other students are asked to arrive no earlier than 8:35 am and are to remain socially distant from others

If you are dropping off your children

Please drop your children off at the back of the school.  There will be staff available on the rear yard to help direct any students who do not know where they are going.

If your child needs your assistance finding their classroom teacher, please on the street and walk over to the school. Please do not enter the parking lot or bus area. To meet our distancing requirements, we ask that you leave the school property once your child’s class is found and you’ve said your good-byes.  Teachers will be spaced out along the yard with signage to indicate classes.

If your child has medication or Plan of Care forms:

These forms and medication can be given to staff outside at the table located on the tarmac.

School Greeters:

We will have two school “Greeters” who will meet students first thing in the mornings.  Students will be reminded to put on a mask and to socially distance as they enter the building and they may assist with hand sanitizer.

Designated Entry/Exit Doors:

To facilitate speedy entry in the morning and to limit unnecessary travel through the building, each grade/class will be assigned an entry/exit door. These doors will be labeled.  This will be the only door that students will use for entering the building, for accessing outdoor activities (and recess) and departing at the end of the school day. Teachers will work with students on the first day to ensure they know which door they will use and where to line up on all subsequent days to use it.

Late Arrival:

Given our new entry procedures, it is critically important that students arrive on time.  On the first day, students who are late should check-in with Staff at the Information Table at the front of the school.

Entering the Building:

The process for entering into the building will be staggered and teachers will take their time entering the building on the first day. We will have one class enter at each of the doors at a time. Students will move directly into their classrooms upon entry.

Regular School Days

School will resume full time and each day for everyone starting on September 18th.

Arrival:

If your child takes the bus, they will be dismissed from one bus at a time and sent to the prearranged meeting location for their class.

If your child gets dropped off, please come no more than 10 minutes early and head for the class meeting location.

Entry:

Classes will enter under their teacher’s direction. Classes sharing the same hallway will enter one at a time.

Students will not be using hooks this year and do not need to change their shoes upon entering the building. All student belongings will be kept in their bags. Students may put their supplies into their assigned desks during the school day, but desks must be emptied at the end of each day. Bags will be kept on the back of student chairs.

Students will be asked to bring a minimal amount of personal belongings to school.

Late Arrival:

Given our new entry procedures, it is critically important that students arrive on time.  If late, please bring your child to the front doors of the school and dial 519-823-5450 and press ‘0’.

Hand Washing and Sanitizing:

All staff, students and essential visitors will be expected to conduct proper hand hygiene, washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer, at the following times:

•   Upon entering the school

•   At regular time intervals throughout day

•   Before/after eating food

•   After using the restroom

•   Before/after outdoor play

•   After sneezing or coughing

•   Before putting on and after removing PPE and/or non-medical masks/face coverings. Where possible, windows and doors will be opened to allow fresh outdoor air into the school.

Class Groupings:

Students remain with only their class during the day, including during recess and lunch. This class is considered their “cohort.”

There will be signage on walls and floors to help students maintain physical distance from one another, where possible. Staff will attempt to maximize physical distance between chairs and tables/desks in all rooms. Staff will avoid activities involving shared objects/toys and look to move activities outside to allow for more space.

Water Bottles:

Students will be encouraged to bring their own labelled water bottle to school each day. All water fountains can be used to refill water bottles. Drinking directly from water fountains during COVID-19 will not be permitted.

Recess Information:

We have created a recess plan that lessens the number of students outside and designates specific locations for students to play. Our plan includes splitting the school in half where approximately half the students will eat while the other are outside for play. We will have a number of supervisors supporting students during eating and outdoor times. We will review with students the type of play that is permitted outside. At this time, our creative playground and sand pits will be closed to students. We will provide students with play equipment specific to their class. Please refrain from sending in play equipment at this time.

Lunch Procedures:

Students will be eating in their classrooms. All students will have to eat with their classmates; we will no longer use student helpers in classrooms. Please ensure that items in student lunches are easy for them to open and independently access.

We will no longer be permitting student lunches to be dropped after arrival. Parents are not permitted into the school and this would create challenges at the office to accommodate lunch delivery.

At the moment we are not permitted to have lunch programs deliver food to the school (pizza, lunchbox orders, Subway etc).  Please ensure your child arrives with enough food for the day.

Early Pick Up

Please call 519-823-5450 and press ‘0’ to speak to the office or to leave a message about an early pick-up.  Please call before 10 am to ensure your child is waiting for you.  The phone and messages will not be checked between 12:00pm & 1:00 pm each day.

When you arrive to pick up your child, please come to the front doors and call 519-823-5450 and press ‘0’.

End of Day Procedures:

Our exit locations will be the same as arrival. If Parents are picking up their children, please do not use the parking lot.  The parking lot and bus area cannot be accessed.  Parents should safely distance themselves if coming to the school to pick up their children. Please arrive in time to meet them outside their designated door. Classroom teachers may provide more specific details pertinent to their class departure process.

Students leaving on the bus will be released to their particular waiting spot in a staggered way that encourages physical distancing.

If your child is registered to ride the bus and is being picked up instead, please call the office each morning to sign them off the bus. Please also ensure your child knows the plan for the day before they leave for school.

Access to the School

Only essential visitors are permitted inside the school (e.g., maintenance personnel).

All parents and visitors will not be permitted inside schools during the pandemic, except in case of emergency. At entry and dismissal times, parents are to remain outside the school and adhere to physical distancing protocols.
