Masks, Symptoms and Procedures – UPDATED

Posted March 5, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This is a friendly reminder about some of the procedures and policies that must be followed under the direction of Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health and the Upper Grand District School Board. Please read below for current guidelines and procedures that must be adhered to while attending Westwood PS. These guidelines are current as of Feb 19, 2021.

COVID-19 screening

All students must complete and pass their daily self screening prior to coming to school each day. Students are expected to stay home if symptoms or possible exposures are identified and parents must phone the school to inform them of their child’s absence. To assist with screening each day, parents can use the province’s COVID-19 school screening tool at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/. Screening your child every day before leaving for school is one of the best ways to help keep our schools and community safe.

Mask Requirements

Masks must be worn at all times, including during recess.  Students who need a mask break may find a place in the yard (in their zone) during designated recess times without mixing cohorts, and stay 2m apart.

Because of the new requirements for indoor and outdoor mask wearing, masks are being soiled more often. As a result, we are asking that all students have multiple masks with them at school at all times. It is highly recommended that students have at least three masks per day. This will help to ensure proper mask hygiene is followed and that everyone at Westwood remains safe.

We will also be requiring all parents/guardians who enter school property for drop off or pick up to wear a mask or face covering. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Symptomatic Students

When a student is sent home from school because they are exhibiting covid-19 symptoms, everyone in the household must also stay home while the symptomatic student is awaiting COVID-19 test results or an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider. Stay home until the person with symptoms gets a negative COVID-19 test result or is diagnosed with another illness from a health care provider.

Symptoms

The following are a list of common symptoms for covid-19 for your reference. We will be sending students home who exhibit any one of these symptoms:

  • fever and/or chills (= or >37.8)
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Decrease or loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat or difficulty swallowing
  • Runny or stuffy nose/congested nose
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Muscle aches

We thank you for your continued support and cooperation during these challenging times.
