ILPS Update  – Nov 1st, 2021

Posted November 1, 2021

Hello, to all of our Island Lake families,

It is already the month of November!!  We are seeing a huge improvement in the relationships between our students.  We know coming back to the school environment was an adjustment for everyone.  We thank our staff and students for working together with our parents and guardians to make sure that Kindness and Compassion are part of our everyday interactions.

Please check out our website and our online calendar for more information about our school.  Parents can click on the <Select Language> button at the top of the page to view our website in a variety of languages.

Looking back on October –

We would like to thank Ms. McPherson, one of our Planning Time teachers for organizing the display for October’s Islamic Heritage Month.  Ms. McPherson reached out to one of our families who very kindly sent in some resources and very special items for us to display in the front foyer (see picture on the website- https://www.ugdsb.ca/islandlake/ ).  Ms. McPherson’s email below was sent out to all staff.  This was a wonderful learning opportunity for all of us here at school.

Display Case

“Thanks to one of our parents, who brought in several things to me, our display case is filled with items that are significant in the Islamic faith. This is a great opportunity to offer some information to students to help reduce ignorance and fear towards Islam. There are also cards written about each item, so it really helps to promote religious literacy. If you had time, perhaps on your next library visit, you may want to stop and allow your class to take a look and maybe even read the cards out loud?”

Halloween/Black and Orange Day –

For those families that participate in Halloween festivities, we had a wonderful Dress-Up day last Thursday.  Thank you to all of our families for ensuring costumes were culturally appropriate for school.

Looking forward to November:

– it is Hindu Heritage Month in the Upper Grand DSB.   This year, on Thursday, November 4,  Diwali is celebrated – it is a very special festival of lights and is a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It is observed by more than a billion people from a variety of faiths around the world.  We look forward to learning more in our classes and seeing the display that Ms. McPherson is planning for our front foyer.

-we will be observing Remembrance Day on November 11 – Ms. McPherson and our Grade 8 team will be working together to create a virtual assembly to celebrate peace while honouring all of those who fought for the freedom we enjoy here in Canada.

-Treaty Awareness Week is November 1-5 this year – Our Board Equity Team and Ms. Jamieson, one of our Core French teachers has provided some excellent resources for our staff to use to share information with our learners about treaties and the important role they played in Canada’s history.

-Bullying Prevention Week is November 16-20 – we will be engaging our students in learning conflict resolution strategies to reduce incidents of bullying  and the importance of reporting incidents to an adult to stop bullying behaviour.  Please refer to our Bullying Prevention Policy on our school website for more details.

– As the Board did last year, Progress Reports will be available for parents to download near the end of the month.  Please look out for more information coming soon from the Board via email and on the school website.

On behalf of all of the Island Lake Staff, thank you for your continued support.
