Today is Orange Shirt Day, a day to remember and honour the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children who were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend residential schools. It is also a day to honour Survivors, their families, and the communities who continue to be affected by the legacy of the residential school system. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 with the story of Phyllis Webstad. Phyllis attended St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in Williams Lake, BC in the 70s. On her first day of school, her crisp new orange shirt, a gift from her grandmother, was stripped away from her. She was forced to wear a school uniform and her shirt was never returned to her. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at residential school: how her feelings didn’t matter, how she felt worthless and no one cared about her. Today, we encourage everyone in the EDHS community to take some time to learn, listen, and reflect. You can also take a look at the Orange Shirt Day information and displays on the bulletin boards throughout the school.We invite everyone to wear orange today as a sign of remembrance, learning, and our commitment to ensuring that every child matters.
