Principal’s Message, 1948

The school year 1947-48 will long be remembered by the staff and students of the O.H.S. The uprooting of habits in the old building in the formation of new ones in temporary quarters in the basements of churches has been hard on both. Since February 1st, the students of O.H.S. have shown that they possess initiative and perseverance to meet the new situation.

For the next two years, we can look forward to temporary quarters in one building. The going will be tough, especially since we will have no playground or gymnasium.

The message that I would like to convey to the students is the joy of overcoming difficulty and doing a job well. This can be appreciated only by those who have experienced it. There is no pleasure in half-doing a job. The future security and prosperity of the country and the happiness of its citizens depend much more upon having a body of people in it who have learned this lesson than upon any material resources which it may possess no matter how great they may be. The keen intellect so well trained by hard work, that it is readily responsive to the great things in literature, history and science is a great possession. Hard work at school is required to obtain this treasure. The only real lasting joy that there can be for us in our school life is in doing our daily tasks well.

If the students of the Orangeville High School get this vision, and profit by putting it into practice, then the future will belong to them because they have prepared for it.
