Pan-African Flag
WHSS is flying the Pan-African flag in celebration of Black History month for February. The flag will be used to teach students about Pan-Africanism, an ideology and movement that encourages the solidarity of Africans worldwide. It is based on the belief that unity is vital to economic, social and political progress and aims to unify and uplift people of the African diaspora. The tricolour flag consists of red, black and green. The colour red represents the blood that unites all people of African ancestry, and shed for liberation. The colour black represents Black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of a flag. The colour green represents the natural wealth of Africa. Further, students will be taught about national and international Black people who positively influenced both Canada and the world at large. Historical figures may include Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, Muhammed Ali, Harriet Tubman, Viola Desmond, Lawrence Hill, Lincoln Alexander, among others.
