ENG 1D1

This course emphasizes the analytical reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs and their daily lives. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including short stories, poems, and short essays, and will investigate and create media works. An important focus will be the correct and effective use of spoken and written language.

Note: This course fulfils one of the compulsory English requirements.

ENG 1P1

This course emphasizes key reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school and their daily lives. Students will study plays, short stories, and newspaper and magazine articles, and will describe and create media works. An important focus will be the correct use of spoken and written language.

Note: This course fulfils one of the compulsory English requirements.

Course Outline

Short Stories Unit

• Students read several short stories and answer questions related to the stories (critical thinking, inference etc.).
• Students write opinion paragraphs on subjects relating to the short stories.
• Students watch the movie, The Goonies, and complete a character sketch activity.
• Students write their own short stories (culminating activity).

Poetry Unit

• Students review a glossary of poetic devices.
• Students do “Poetry Centres” where they do a series of 12 activities to help them learn the skills needed for the culminating activity for the unit.
• Students write their own poems and form a poetry booklet (culminating activity).

Drama Unit

• Students will read a series of short dramas and will answer questions related to the dramas.
• Students will write their own short drama (culminating activity).

Novel Unit

• Students will read the novel, Hold Fast, and write journals for each chapter. There are also chapter questions to do.
• The culminating project is creative in nature and reflects the students’ understanding of the story.

Language & Writing

• Students will do Literacy Test Preparation in Writing—info paragraphs, a series of paragraphs, a news report, summaries, and writing based on photos.
• Students will do Literacy Test Preparation in Reading—reading graphical texts, informational texts, and literary texts, and answering questions.
• Students will write an expository paragraph, a narrative paragraph, a descriptive paragraph, and a persuasive paragraph.
• Students will learn to write a five-paragraph essay (review the outline).
• Students will do grammar lessons to give them the writing skills they need for success in Grade 9 and continued success through high school.
• Students will learn 100 vocabulary words and will be quizzed on their knowledge.

Media & Advertising

• Students will learn about advertisements, about implicit and explicit media messages and embedded messages in ads.
• Students will look at the parts of a newspaper (briefly) and parts of a magazine.
• Students will write a magazine article (culminating activity).

I.S.U.

• Students will create their own magazine, on a topic of their choice. Its creation will involve the skills they’ve acquired throughout the course.
