Take Our Kids to Work Day – Gr. 9 Students

To: Parents of Grade 9 Students

Re: Take Our Kids to Work Day – November 1, 2023

Take our Kids to Work Day (TKWD) is a Students Commission of Canada (SCC) career exploration
initiative where Grade 9 students spend the day in the life of a working professional. This year’s theme
is Everyone Belongs Here. Upper Grand Grade 9 students may participate this year in person on
November 1, 2023. Students can participate by taking part in activities and events organized and hosted by their parent’s
employer or the employer of a relative, friend or community host.

For more information, please visit the Upper Grand District School Board website
(https://www.ugdsb.ca/parents/take-our-kids-to-work-day/ ) where you will find SCC’s resources
including a Family Resource Guide and a Workplace Guide.

Please sign and return the below attached Parental Consent Form indicating your intention to have your
child participate in this day or whether they will be attending regular school programming (which
may include career exploration programming & activities).

Please note, if your child chooses not to participate in TKWD, they are expected to attend school as
usual. If a student is not participating in the program and/or has not returned a signed parental
consent, and is not in attendance at school, they will be marked absent from school and you will
receive an automated evening call for the student as per school procedure.
If your child is attending AT WORK, the focus must be on “job shadowing” and not in participating in
actual work. Employers should start the day with an orientation and/or Health & Safety training
(depending on what the job shadow entails), including outlining the Employer’s Covid requirements. It
is your family’s responsibility to obtain Employer’s and/or Human Resource’s consent for your child to
attend at the workplace on November 1st.

The SCC Workplace Guide has some good suggestions for Employers on how the day should look. It
includes: To dos, communication templates and Health and Safety guidelines (a sample agenda is also
available). We suggest you provide these resources to the Employer well in advance of TKWD.
Alternatively, you can refer them to the Upper Grand District School Board website (link above) where
they can access the resources. The resources and more information are available on the SCC website,
however, registration is required on their website and there is an optional survey.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school.

Thank you!
