Student Supports
BYOD
BYOD….The Cloud….Chromebooks, Flipped Classrooms….What does all this mean? You have probably heard some of these things from your child/ren. Hopefully, they have been able to tell you what each of these things is, but in case they haven’t, here is a really brief synopsis.
- BYOD – this just means that we are encouraging students to bring their own devices, if they have them. Students are often more comfortable using the tools that they are familiar with, so teachers may ask them to use them to do quick internet searches, complete a quick survey, take photos of a solution on the board, etc. Teachers may also ask students to put their technology away at appropriate times.
- The Cloud – this is our amazing online “software”. Our students each have their own drive which allows them to access their documents, presentations and school e-mail, at home and at school. It allows students to collaborate on an assignment while they are in the same room, or apart. Teachers can also conference with students about work this way.
- Chromebooks – are some of the new technology we have purchased for our school. Most of our students will have used them. These small portable devises allow students to wirelessly connect to the internet through their cloud account. They can work on assignments that are automatically saved in their drive. They may use them in a class, or in the library.
- Flipped Classrooms – We have often asked our students to read something or work through something before coming to class. It is a great way to have students really think about the topic of study, whether it is healthy eating, the nature of gases, world issues, or Macbeth. When students work at figuring something out, they are engaging in the very act of critical thinking. They have to recall what they might already know, they have an opportunity to challenge the way they are thinking about something, and they determine what they don’t know. This means that when they come to class they can be thoroughly engaged in their own learning and engage with other learners.
The opportunities are endless. Technology is just a tool to be able to get at the learning.
