GCVI Black Students’ Union appears on CBC Kids discussing Black Futures

February 22, 2023

GUELPH, ON — Students from the Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute’s (GCVI) Black Students Union teach us a valuable lesson.

They have been featured in a video discussing the transition from Black History Month to Black Futures Month. Each student in the union reflected on what the term ‘Black Futures’ meant to them.

“To me it means the progression of the Black race,” said one of the members “and the history; acknowledging both and seeing how we can move forward in the future.”

The video explains how the term ‘Black Futures’ gained consensus in the early 2010s when the Movement for Black Lives organization took Black History Month and reframed it into Black Futures Month. The rebranding is described as “a visionary, forward-looking spin on celebrations of Blackness in February.”
