A Semester Is Short
Secondary school semesters are only 97 instructional days long. Last year, some regions of our board had 14 days where buses were not running—that’s more than 10% of the semester. Missing these days adds up quickly.
Learning Continues Even When Buses Don’t
When schools remain open, teaching and learning continues in our schools. Students will still be engaged in lessons consolidating learning and reinforcing concepts. These days are excellent opportunities to not only get caught up but dig into new learning expectations for each course. Missing these days can mean extra stress from trying to catch up.
Families Have Options
If travel is safe for your family:
Walk if you live nearby
Arrange a ride with a friend or neighbour
Carpool with other families
Come in later once the roads are clear and the shovelling is done!
Even occasional attendance on snow days helps students stay on pace.
Strong Attendance Supports Achievement
Research and board data show that regular attendance is directly linked to stronger academic performance. Students who attend consistently build the literacy, math, and problem-solving skills needed for long-term success.
Benefits of Attending on No-Bus Days
Learning continues
Opportunities for small group work
More one-on-one teacher support
Extra time to complete assignments
Stronger connection to classroom routines
These advantages help students stay confident, prepared, and on track toward earning credits.
Schools Are Safe, Open, and Ready to Welcome Students
On days when buses are cancelled, schools remain open. Schools are staffed and learning continues. Walkways, entryways, and school grounds are cleared, and safety protocols are in place.
For those that simply cannot attend due to transportation the learning can continue at home!
Check in to the online learning platform for resources and updates that the class may be working on (Brightspace, Google Classroom)
Work ahead on previously assigned projects and homework
Read a good book!
Your Efforts Make a Real Impact
Every school day counts—especially in a short semester. Supporting your child in getting to school, even when buses aren’t running, makes a measurable difference in their learning and achievement.
