Black Future Month- Guest Speakers and Performers- February 26th, 2026
GCVI's annual Black Future Month Assembly is happening this week on February 26. Student leaders have worked hard to put together another educational and celebratory show. We are also excited to welcome many guest performers to the stage.
Jay Douglas: Jay Douglas is a 3-time Juno Awards nominee, a music producer and band leader of the Jay Douglas All-Star Band. He has performed at various festivals worldwide, including the likes of Rastafest Festival in Toronto and the 4 Seasons Reggae Cruise in Atlanta, Georgia. His professional career was ignited as the frontman of “The Cougars”, a popular group in the Caribbean nightclub scene in both Toronto and Montreal that performed regularly throughout the 60’s and 70’s playing a mix Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae, Rhythm and Blues, Soul and Funk. As a solo artist Jay has performed around the world with many international reggae stars.
Waleed Abdulhamid: With his versatility in playing over 20 instruments, ranging from the guitar, flute to djembe and the tambour, Waleed is an internationally award winning musician. Since his arrival from Sudan in 1992, Waleed has played and recorded with a large number of well known artists. He is currently a Music Professor at Humber College and the University of Toronto and he is an active member in the Toronto music scene.
Afro Tribal: Afro tribal, founded by Binti Koroma, a GCVI alumni. Afro Tribal is a dance group that provides both traditional and modern West African dance lessons to people of all ages within the Guelph area. Afro Tribal is a not for profit organization, and through their dance lessons they collect food, school supplies and clothing for communities in need in Sierra Leone.
