Alternative Education

Centre Dufferin’s Alternative Education program is designed for students who have struggled in the regular school setting. This is a limited enrolment program that is designed to meet challenges such as
regular attendance, credit accumulation and school engagement. These factors are considered when a student is recommended for this program. Enrolment in Alternative Education is at the discretion of the Administration and Student Success team.

Students enrolled in the Alternative Education program may also be recommended to the credit recovery program. The courses offered model an experiential learning approach.
Options available in the Alternative Education Program are:

ROOTS – RELATIONSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES OBTAINED THROUGH SKILLS

Roots

This course celebrates students’ strengths and focuses on the journey to wellbeing through personal, social, emotional and academic development. Students will examine the dynamics of human relationships, including the connections between their own self-concept and their interpersonal relationships. They will learn and practice strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships with friends, family and community. Through self-awareness and reflection activities, students will begin to understand what is takes to flourish and thrive in the teenage years and beyond. Students will earn a HHD3O credit.

HEALTH FOR LIFE (PPZ3C)

This course enables students to examine the factors that influence their own health practices and behaviours as well as those factors that contribute to the development of healthy communities. It emphasizes the concept of wellness, which addresses all aspects of well-being – physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social – and promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and building and maintaining a positive sense of self. Students will develop the skills necessary to make healthy choices and create a personal wellness plan.  They will also design initiatives that encourage others to lead healthy, active lives. The course prepares students for college programs in health sciences, fitness, wellness, and health promotion.
