Province announces ‘Plan to Catch Up’ as UGDSB prepares for back to school

On Monday July 25, 2022, Ontario’s Ministry of Education announced its ‘Plan to Catch Up’ to support student learning when school returns in September 2022. 

The UGDSB is looking forward to welcoming and welcoming back Upper Grand students in September, and staff are hard at work preparing for back to school. 

Among the plans for September 2022, the UGDSB will continue its work in Learning Recovery and Tutoring Supports with the plan that the board began in the 2021-22 school year and continued over the summer months. The board has committed to continuing Phase 3 of this plan for the 2022-23 school year, beyond the funding announced last year by the province. Resources have been allocated for Special Education and Mental Health supports. 

The province’s new Grade 1-9 Science and technology curriculum will be implemented in September, following the roll out of the new Math curriculum in 2021-22. 

Both these new curricula have updated real world examples, with a focus on STEM applications, Coding, Emerging Technologies and Financial Literacy. The UGDSB has been a long-time supporter and advocate of STEM education and welcome opportunities to expand this education further for our students. We are also pleased to see the focus on connecting STEM learning to real-world issues, sustainability, the skilled trades and more. Educators and program leaders will also expand on our current work in de-streaming to include the Grade 9 science course.

The focus of the UGDSB’s de-streaming work has been on developing Culturally Relevant and Responsive Instruction, ensuring there is equitable access to successful outcomes for all students and implementing updated curriculum expectations such as Coding and Financial Literacy.

In response to COVID-19, the UGDSB will continue to monitor the situation, take our guidance from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, and take the steps necessary to support a full and safe return to school.
