Adopt an Athlete for Special Olympics – Guelph School Boards are on board

MEDIA RELEASE
February 9, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario — Special Olympics Ontario is teaming up with local school boards to help send athletes to the Special Olympics this spring.

When Special Olympics organizers asked the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board to “change someone’s life” we were all in.

Both boards are aligning schools with the Adopt an Athlete program. Each school has received a plaque with an athlete’s photo, sport and hometown and is being asked to try to raise $500 to “Adopt an Athlete.” The program helps to cover costs for a Special Olympics athlete who has trained hard, competed and qualified to participate in the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Spring Games.

Schools are also asked to participate in Special Olympics Day on April 12 and are invited to attend Opening and Closing Ceremonies and all competitions.

The Special Olympics Provincial Spring Games take place in Guelph from May 26 to 28, 2016. They will be the largest Spring Games in Special Olympics Ontario history and feature swimming, 5 and 10-pin bowling, powerlifting, basketball and rhythmic gymnastics.

Any person or group can easily Adopt an Athlete by going to the Special Olympics Ontario website.
