Board Meeting Highlights for September 2016

For Immediate Release
September 28, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – The September meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on September 27, 2016. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

Centre Peel Secondary School update

Following a report by the board’s Planning department, trustees approved a number of recommendations regarding Centre Peel Secondary School.

The situation at Centre Peel is unique, as the secondary school is housed in a single, 21-pupil place classroom within Centre Peel Public School. However, as of Sept. 6, 2016, there were no students enroled at Centre Peel SS. Secondary students in that community have chosen to attend Norwell District Secondary School. Attending secondary school at Norwell has presented expanded opportunities for students, as the school has more facilities and social services appropriate for adolescents, versus Centre Peel PS.

Given the unique circumstances, trustees voted to permit the closure of Centre Peel SS. Because there are no students enroled at Centre Peel SS, trustees approved an exemption from the board’s Pupil Accommodation Review process, in accordance with Ministry guidelines and board policy. Students will be formally re-directed to Norwell for grades 9 to 12, after graduating from grade 8 at Centre Peel PS. The closure of the secondary classroom will not affect the rest of Centre Peel PS.

2015 2016 Interim Financial Reporting

Trustees were presented with the board’s 2015 2016 Interim Financial Report for August 31, 2016. The report compares the 2015 2016 year-to-date spending as a percentage of budget to the year-to-date spending for 2014 2015. Operating expenditures in 2015-16 in comparison to budget reflect higher than budgeted enrolments and implementation of labour agreements. Operating Revenue in 2015-16 will be higher due to the increase in enrolment and to fund the implementation of labour agreements.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held by on Tues. Oct. 25, 2016, at the Guelph Board Office, 500 Victoria Road North. Everyone is welcome to attend. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
