Centre Wellington DHS holds Relay for Life fundraiser

FERGUS, Ontario – Last week, Centre Wellington District High School hosted a Relay for Life fundraiser to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
The intent of Relay for Life is to make sure no one faces cancer alone. These events bring together teams of people to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and help raise funds to fight all types of cancer. Teams work together over 6 to 12 hours to walk a track to raise money and awareness.
On May 12, CWDHS held its Relay for Life event from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., at the school. Before the relay event, the school food program hosted a Survivor Lunch for community and staff cancer survivors, student committee members and community dignitaries.
At 12:00 p.m. the relay started with Mayor Kelly Linton welcoming everyone and opening the event. The Fergus Pipe Band accompanied cancer survivors around for the first lap. Following the relay was a survivor address to event participants followed by the Luminary Ceremony.
The event was organized by students and saw 31 teams come together with over 220 participants. Local businesses were involved in the event by making donations and Cogeco filmed the day.
The event raised more than $53,000 for cancer research and was a huge success.
