College Heights kicks off new semester with event promoting mental wellness

For Immediate Release
February 2, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – College Heights Secondary School is starting the new semester by promoting mental wellness and student well-being.

The Guelph school is hosting a student wellness day on Friday Feb. 5.

The day will begin with Nashville’s Ryan Laird. Laird is a country musician who also spends time speaking to students about his experience of being bullied throughout his elementary school years.

In his presentations, Laird talks about the challenges he faced and how he learned to overcome them and chase his dream to become a musician. Laird strives to inspire and motivate students, to encourage them to reach for their goals and to not give in to bullying tactics.

Throughout the day, students will participate in workshops ranging from art-based activities, to sports, to sessions on mental health topics. More than 30 speakers from the community will join students and staff for the day. College Heights’ wellness day will end with a staff-student hockey game and a coffee house.

The day serves as one strategy to promote mental wellness in the school. Friday’s wellness day will mark the beginning of a new semester and College Heights staff hope it will give students a chance to have a fresh outlook.
