GCVI student awarded prestigious Morehead-Cain scholarship

GUELPH, Ontario – A student at Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute has been awarded a prestigious scholarship for post-secondary education.

GCVI’s Raymond Tu was awarded the Morehead-Cain, a four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It includes full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, supplies, funds for educational opportunities and more. The scholarship also includes four summer experiences, known as the Morehead-Cain’s Summer Enrichment Program. It’s the first full merit scholarship program in the United States, founded at that country’s first public university.

The Morehead-Cain is open to students from all over the world. Canadian applications are reviewed by Morehead-Cain staff, professional readers and alumni. Between 15-20 candidates are named semi-finalists and are invited to continue in the application process. Between four to six semi-finalists are named as finalists. Those students then join more than 130 finalists from the U.S. and around the world for final interviews.

Being selected as a recipient of the Morehead-Cain, Raymond will spend the next four years enrolled in the Environmental Health Sciences program in the Gillings School of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill.

In addition to his studies, Raymond is also incredibly active in the Guelph community, volunteering for the Guelph Youth Council at City Hall where he helps to organize youth-oriented events around the city, such as TEDx and MusicWorks | StageWorks.

He is also involved with his local neighbourhood group, the West Willow Village Neighbourhood Group. Raymond started as a volunteer for the children’s program and now is involved in everything from web design and helping file taxes to facilitating babysitting courses.

When asked about what the next four years have in store, Raymond said one of the most exciting things about the scholarship is all of the amazing people he’s met through the process, and the ones he will meet in the future. “The Morehead-Cain foundation’s staff and scholars are all such intelligent [and] kind-hearted people,” he said.
