Guelph students learn to write, play music at Girls Rock Camp

GUELPH, Ontario – Nineteen of Guelph’s newest rock musicians are ready to take the stage following a week of fun over the March Break.
Girls Rock Camp, in partnership with the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and Kazoo! Fest, offers female, trans and gender nonconforming youth a safe and supportive space to learn from experienced musicians.
Now in its second year, the goal of the week is to empower the students to be who they are, be creative, while learning new things and making friends. Organizers launched the camp in 2016 to address the gender disparity in a predominantly male rock music scene.
All week at John McCrae Public School, six counsellors led 19 campers through a unique learning experience. The girls learned how to write music, play an instrument, form a band and prepare for a performance. They also had visits from guest musicians and took part in workshops including sessions on soundboard operation and movement. The campers also made buttons that they’ll hand out at their final performance.
The campers formed four bands: The Rockets, The Evil Kids, The Polar Pineapples and Violet Ice. Friday was dress rehearsal, and on Saturday the bands will perform at John McCrae PS for their adoring fans.
All are welcome to attend the final concert. Admission is ‘pay what you can’ with all proceeds helping to fund next year’s camp.

The camp is possible thanks to funding from the Guelph Community Foundation and the Oak Tree Project. Camp organizers also held two fundraisers at venues downtown Guelph this year, and crowd-funded on Indiegogo.
