Mitchell Woods PS celebrates 194 awesome days

June 17, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – A school in Guelph is fostering community engagement, one tweet at a time.

If you follow Mitchell Woods Public School on Twitter, you’ll notice a lot of awesome things happening at the school. That’s because for the entire school year, @MitchellWoodsPS has been sharing quick glimpses of school life using the hashtag #mwpsawesome.

Teacher-Librarian Kei Fanjoy is behind the tweets, which began as a way of cataloguing the school year’s 194 days with positive thoughts, while promoting activities around the school and community. Fanjoy said she was inspired by hearing Neil Pasricha, author of The Book of Awesome, at the Upper Grand District School Board’s Learning Fair last summer.

Once the school year started, she began tweeting #mwpsawesome things, encouraging members of the school community to do the same.

All year, the school’s Twitter account has showcased student accomplishments, school events, inspirational quotes and more.

Just a small sample of the tweets include:

“Rockin it at Special Olympics!!”

“A BIG thanks to all the Gr. 9 students we had in helping out for #KidsToWork day! We have enjoyed having you back for the day!”

“#56 – Amazing things happen when you work hard!”

“Our updated map is back up on the library wall! The World really does come together at Mitchell Woods #mwpsawesome.”

Fanjoy also writes the tweet of the day on a poster in the school library, so those who don’t use Twitter can participate. Kids, she said, are often quick to point out if she hasn’t updated the poster for the day – engagement she hopes will continue next year.

Fanjoy said the most awesome thing about the project so far has been the involvement from the community and students. “Having parents tweet the school using our hashtag has been really cool,” she said.

Next year, Fanjoy hopes to expand on the project, using the #mwpsawesome hashtag to build even more community involvement, by issuing surveys, makerspace challenges, and scavenger hunts.
