Schools worldwide celebrate Safer Internet Day 2016

For Immediate Release
February 9, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Tuesday Feb. 9 is Safer Internet Day (SID), an international day to promote safer use of online technology and mobile devices.

SID focuses largely on educating children and youth worldwide through events and activities that raise awareness of emerging online issues, such as cyberbullying and sharing images on social media networks.

Now in its thirteenth year, SID is being marked in more than 100 countries, across all continents.

This year’s theme is “Play your part for a better Internet!” Organizers want to get the message across that all of us – from children and youth to educators and politicians – have a part to play in creating a safer online world.

In Canada, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, a charitable organization dedicated to the personal safety of children, is offering every school in the country free Internet safety resources to help educate children and youth about online risks.

For more information on SID and how to get your students and children involved, visit www.saferinternetday.org. The website also provides resources for teachers, counsellors and parents to help educators celebrate SID in their school.

Share how you’re marking Safer Internet Day on Twitter using the hashtags #SID2016, #Iplaymypart and #playyourpart.
