Spencer Avenue students showcase action project on World Water Day

March 22, 2017

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – A class at Spencer Avenue Elementary School is hoping to make a splash on World Water Day.

On Wednesday, the grade 7/8 students presented an action project to the school and community at a World Water Day assembly. Attendees were encouraged to wear blue to mark the day.

At the assembly, students and community members learned about the water stewardship project spearheaded by the Orangeville youth. It focuses on the effects of rising sodium and chloride levels in their community’s water – the passionate students are searching for alternatives to the use of road salt.

The class is also participating in a documentary competition: the Water Docs @ School Action Projects Program. Water Docs is an 8-month learning and action program open to Ontario students in grade 8. The program instills in students “a deep caring for the environment” and helps them develop skills in leadership, project management, team-building and filmmaking. The overall goal of the program is to teach youth about water and water systems and instill in them a passion for water stewardship.

The competition involves students creating a documentary project based on the knowledge and facts they’ve learned about water. As part of the project, the students also conducted online surveys, asking participants about their use and knowledge of road salt and other ice melting alternatives.

Congratulations to the students in Ms. Gray’s 7/8 class for their hard work!
