Thousands of students to learn about agriculture at the International Plowing Match 2016

For Immediate Release
September 14, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Students from across Southern Ontario will spend next week learning about agriculture, farming and rural lifestyles.

The 103rd International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) will be held in the Town of Minto (Harrison), Ontario, from September 20 to 24.

The IPM promotes agriculture through a variety of exhibitors, demonstrations and, of course, plowing matches. The expo also features a full schedule of entertainment and performances by acts such as the Dancing Tractors, the RCMP Musical Ride and the Knights of Valour jousting company.

Next week, more than 6,000 students from the Upper Grand District School Board and surrounding school boards will attend the IPM.

The IPM’s Education Committee, co-chaired by teachers from Minto-Clifford Public School, will have two interactive tents at the IPM to engage and inform students. One will showcase farm animal demonstrations by local farmers. The other is all about the “Fresh Taste of Farming” – teaching kids where the food in the grocery store comes from.

Students will also explore farm machinery displays and demonstrations and learn about the history of agriculture in Ontario.

On Wed. Sept. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Career Education Council of Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin will host the Careers in Agriculture Event, in partnership with the County of Wellington’s Economic Development Department. The event will feature 25 career booths representing education, employers and organizations with various connections to the agriculture sector. Students will receive a “passport” to guide them through the booths and meet exhibitors. The event will also feature guest speakers sharing their experiences of working in agriculture.
