Upper Grand DSB marks Treaties Recognition Week

For Immediate Release
November 7, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – This week, the Upper Grand District School Board joins boards across Ontario in marking Treaties Recognition Week.

Earlier this year, the government of Ontario passed legislation to recognize the importance of treaties and bring awareness to the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the province of Ontario.

The Treaties Recognition Week Act, 2016 designated the first week of November each year as Treaties Recognition Week. This year’s week is Nov. 6-13. Throughout the week, educators across the province will plan learning activities for students and help promote awareness of treaties.

During the first Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, UGDSB is pleased to welcome Ontario Human Rights Commissioner Maurice Switzer (Alderville First Nation), who will discuss reconciliation and the restoration of nation-to-nation relationships on Tuesday Nov. 8 with staff and community guests.

Traditional knowledge keeper, Isaac Murdoch (Serpent River First Nation) will discuss his personal experiences as a treaty partner on his reserve, and about the most important treaty partnership we all have, with the land.

Both Commissioner Switzer and Mr. Murdoch will be visiting a number of secondary school classes to discuss treaty relationships with students during the week.
