Upper Grand staff kick off local fundraising campaign with United Way

For Immediate Release
September 22, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Staff at the Upper Grand District School Board are kicking off the annual United Way fundraising campaign next week.

The campaign will run from September 30 to November 25, 2016, at schools and board facilities across the district.

Donations made to the United Way provide funding for 95 programs at 57 local agencies in the Counties of Dufferin and Wellington, the City of Guelph and Town of Orangeville. These programs support people living in poverty, contribute to the health and well-being of our communities, and ensure kids have what they need to grow into healthy, independent adults.

Just a small sample of the organizations supported by donations made during the United Way campaign include: the Canadian Mental Health Association (Waterloo-Wellington-Dufferin), Big Brothers Big Sisters, local food banks, Family & Children’s Services, Headwaters Communities in Action, Guelph & Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination, Women in Crisis, and TorchLight.

To celebrate the beginning of the campaign, UGDSB staff and United Way representatives will gather at the Guelph Board Office on Friday Sept. 30. They will be joined by special guest, Kirsten Johnston, who will share her story of how the work of one local organization changed her life.

Sixteen years ago, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph matched Johnston – a then insecure and unfocused 11-year-old – with a young woman ready to take on the world. Johnston will describe her time as Little Sister and how it helped shape her life and encouraged her to continue her commitment to the organization by becoming a Big Sister to a shy, introverted young girl.
