A sea of pink at Westside Secondary School

Staff and students at Westside Secondary School in Orangeville are thinking pink – in a big way.

The school’s 11th annual Pink Day was on Friday Nov. 6, where staff and students wore pink and raised funds for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

Over the years, the school has raised more than $84,000; last year alone they raised over $10,000. This year the school topped that, raising a whopping $12,000 for breast cancer research.

The days leading up to Pink Day was deemed “Pink Week” where students were encouraged to wear a little pink throughout the week, and go all out on Friday.

Pink Day is the school’s largest spirit day of the year — nearly all 900 students show up in their pink gear.

Fundraising activities ran throughout the week. On Wednesday and Thursday, students could donate money in exchange for some pink highlights in their hair or get their nails painted.

At Friday’s Pink Day assembly, teachers and students faced off in tug of war competitions, and teachers tested their performance skills in dance offs and lip sync contests.

Cotton candy, cupcakes and pink-wear were sold, with all proceeds going toward their fundraising efforts.

This year, a few students even shaved their heads for the cause, and a number of students will donate their hair to groups that make wigs for cancer patients.

Way to go Westside Thunder!
