Annual H2Awesome! water conference wraps-up on Earth Day

April 22, 2022

GUELPH, ON – Today is Earth Day! And all month long students at the Upper Grand District School Board have been thinking critically about the 2022 H2Awesome! annual event’s theme, “Water is…”.

H2Awesome! is an annual event for intermediate students that celebrates the gift of water. The event allowed grade 7 and 8 students to learn about the importance of water and water conservation.

“The students were inspired to think about their own connection to water and what has shaped that connection. Some of the sharing around the ‘Water Is…’ theme was: ‘water is life,’ ‘water is science,’ ‘water is home,’ ‘water is a human right,’ ‘water is adventure,’ ‘water is a community’ – to name just a few,” said Elementary Curriculum Leader, Heather Walker.

More than 1,000 UGDSB students took part in the various events at the conference, which was held over a five-week period beginning March 22. The conference was intentionally planned to begin on World Water Day and end on Earth Day to help students to spend an extended amount of time focused on environmental learning that also supported their own reflection and connection to water. Overall there were 14 speakers over the month and two of the presentations were in French.

Among those who presented were author and activist, Maude Barlow, as well as Indigenous speaker, Isaac Murdoch, and Parks Canada representatives, Joel Forgёt and Anna Altidor. Many more local, national, and international leaders, artists and advocates shared their connections to water through virtual presentations at this year’s event.
