Beyond Borders students raise impressive amount of money through charity gala

January 25, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – On January 12, students from the Upper Grand District School Board’s Beyond Borders program hosted a charity gala to raise funds for important causes locally, provincially and internationally.

The Kairos charity gala was held at the River Run Centre in Guelph. This annual event is entirely student run. Beyond Borders students lead, organize and run the event from start to finish.

This year’s gala featured performances from musicians Alysha Brilla, Megan Bonnell and Lauren Roy. Poet Wali Shah was also on hand for an emotional performance, along with many other speakers at the event, speaking in support of three great causes.

The local charity the event was supporting this year was Guelph General Hospital, provincially the event supported Mount Sinai Hospital’s Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome unit, a cause very important to the group and internationally, the event supported Doctors Without Borders.

According to Beyond Borders teacher Mike Parsons, each year this event has run, students in the current year make it their goal to out fundraise the previous year. Not only did students out fundraise last year’s event, they more than doubled the money donated to these great causes raising $125,120 in total.

New to the event this year, students really wanted to educate their guests on the causes they were supporting. Students set up a whole room dedicated to education. Among many other things, a medical tent was set up to demonstrate the working environment for doctors working with Doctors Without Borders.

According to Parsons, “In 15 years of teaching, I haven’t been more impressed and inspired by a group of students like I was this year.”

Congratulations to Beyond Borders students for this amazing fundraising achievement!
